Customs and traditions

Experience our traditions

It is very important to us to preserve traditions and to bring Bavarian customs to life for us and our guests in our unique ensemble in the middle of an idyllic Upper Bavarian village. You are cordially invited to celebrate special festivals, name days and other occasions of Bavarian tradition with us throughout the year.

Setting up the maypole

In Aying, the maypole is still raised by hand and very traditionally with scissor poles by the Ayinger Burschenverein. Over a hundred lads erect the 52-meter-high, 10-ton maypole every five years. The next date will be May 1, 2029.

One of the most important feasts of the church year, celebrating the physical presence of Jesus Christ in the sacrament of the Eucharist. This day is traditionally celebrated with a Corpus Christi procession.

June 21

St. John's Day

St. John's night is not only considered the shortest night of the year because of the bonfires. On this evening, we traditionally hang wreaths of herbs and plants on the door of our rooms to protect our guests from the ghosts and demons that used to haunt St. John's Eve.

August 15

Assumption of the Virgin Mary

On this day, herbs are traditionally collected and tied into a bouquet of seven different herbs. The consecrated bouquets serve to protect the house and farm as well as health.

St. Michael's Day

Winter

November 1

All Saints' Day

November 1 is the only day in the church year on which all saints are commemorated. It is one of the quiet holidays on which, for example, no dancing is allowed. In addition to the service, there is a special devotion in St. Andrew's Church.

Bad Tölz November 6

St. Leonhard's ride

This magnificent highlight is celebrated at the end of every farming year. A pilgrimage in honor of the holy horse and cattle patron St. Leonhard. Already in the early hours the four-in-hand carriages with their splendidly decorated floats travel through the Bavarian communities from near and far.

November 11

St. Martin's

There are various theories about the origin of the tradition of preparing geese on St. Martin's Day. In practical terms, we can say: Brauereigasthof serves goose dishes prepared with love and great culinary skill at St. Martin´s.

December 4

Barbara

An established custom on St. Barbara's Day is to cut branches from a cherry or apple tree and place them in water. These branches should bloom until Christmas Eve and brighten up the dark winter season. As the blossoming branches of St. Barbara are supposed to bring good luck for the coming year, we give all guests small branches of St. Barbara on St. Barbara's Day.

Year after year

Christmas / Advent

While some celebrate in cozy parlors and others long for the annual Christmas market in the garden of the Ayinger Bräustüberl, the little guests are mainly looking forward to a visit from St. Nicholas. However, all guests are spoiled with traditional Christmas dishes in our brewery inn.

January 6

Holy Three Kings

In Aying, as tradition has it, the carol singers Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar go from house to house. While our kitchen staff treat you to culinary delights, the carol singers leave their C + M + B sign on their tour of our village to bless our houses.
